Te Hira, meaning “Holy Hill” in Māori, was built in 1904.
The building, which is one of England’s listed buildings of architectural and historic interest, has been a dwelling of many different kinds over the 100 years it has been standing.
During the first world war it was a military hospital, and more recently was a gentleman’s residence before becoming Te Hira Care Home.
“We never imagined our clever and independent mum would need to go in a care home but an increasingly frail body and several falls proved otherwise.
She came to Te Hira in September 2022 just before her 90th birthday, and immediately perked up, putting on weight and being more mobile.
The staff, whatever their role, became our mum’s friends and she enjoyed a banter with them all, everything done with kindness and humour.
It was so reassuring to see how she rallied round and we never imagined, given her initial frailty, that she would be there for over 3 years.
Te Hira kept in touch with any issues and always made us, her family, feel really welcome when visiting and they also became our friends.
At the end our mum had the best of care anyone could wish for.
We cannot thank them enough for all they have done.”
